26% of Manukau’s population is under 15 years of age. Many of these young people live in socio-economically deprived areas, attend low decile schools and many do not get the opportunity to participate in sport and physical recreation.
Despite this, Manukau has produced internationally-acclaimed sports-stars like Valerie Adams, Jonah Lomu, Ruben Wiki, Scott Dixon and Barbara Kendall.
Primary Sport is an initiative that helps to provide the environment that can nurture similar talent. It increases the opportunity for Years 0 - 8 school children across the Counties Manukau Region to participate in sport and physical recreation so that they can develop their skill and interest.
Primary and Intermediate students need varied and modified activities to match their ability and encourage participation and the opportunity to develop skills that can be used in a range of sports and physical activities of their choosing.
Counties Manukau Sport can work with your school in a number of ways.
Primary Sport provides opportunities for Primary and Intermediate school students to be involved in sport and physical recreation by:
Increasing the number of students participating in organized sport at school.
Increasing the availability and accessibility of sporting opportunities to students.
Supporting students in developing skills that will enable them to participate effectively in sport.
Providing professional development for teachers and school staff.

What Schools are saying about our Primary Sport Programme
Clendon Park School
"It encouraged more kids to try out for our school soccer teams, as they had a few basic skills that made them more confident to give it a go"
"Our coach was an amazing mentor and coach for our younger students in the school. He was able to engage them and encourage them to take new risks in an unfamiliar sport."
"A lot more confidence amongst non sporting children who tend not to trial out for teams etc or even participate in game. A lot more confidence from all children along with increased give it a go attitude. Development of teachers as they gained ideas from coach and carried them on through the term".
