Waikato River Alive Project

Wakato River Alive is a collaborative project initiative by –

Auckland Council

Waikato District Council

wakaama

The aim of this initiative is to utilise our most iconic natural resource in this area, the Waikato River and help to increase water based sporting opportunities from Meremere to Port Waikato.

With our project partners we are looking at a multi stage approach over a 3 year period which will include –

1 Water Safety Education and swim to survive programmes in the pool, the river, and surf beach environments.
2 Club development and capability building with local sports clubs.
3 Sport coaching and coach development in the targeted clubs.
4 Assistance in organising meaningful events, competitions and regatta.

The major driver of Waikato River Alive is to be sustainable after the initial 3 years of the project and with the help and guidance from our project Kaumatua – Paul Brown, our cultural advisors – our project partners we are aiming to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
