Free Wriggle & Rhyme, Active Movement for Early Learning sessions have started again for 2010

29 March 2010

The sessions will take a short break during the school holidays as libraries run special holiday programmes.

This means there will be no sessions between the 2nd and 16th of April with Term 2 resuming during the week of Monday the 19th of April. Active Movement is a SPARC (Sport and Recreation NZ) initiative which aims to provide positive movement experiences to stimulate development of both the brain and the body. Each session will be based on the Active Movement set of 14 activity guides using a range of music and movement.

Libraries are working with their Council and Regional Sports Trust to provide Wriggle & Rhyme sessions across the greater Auckland region with the focus mainly for babies from birth to two years.Movement is a child’s first language, so it is important to provide babies with whole body movements’ right from birth. Parents and caregivers are invited to take part in these free weekly sessions at their local library, where they can also learn skills to put into practice at home. While the activities are generally for babies, older pre-schoolers are also welcome to attend Wriggle & Rhyme sessions, and will benefit too.

50 community libraries are taking part in the Wriggle & Rhyme programme across the greater Auckland region. Click here to see a full list of libraries and schedules. For more information on Wriggle & Rhyme, Active Movement for Early Learning visit your local library.

Active Movement in the Gardens

02 March 2010
On the 24 February this month, Counties Manukau Sport organised a free music and movement concert for children under 5 at the Auckland Botanical Gardens in Manurewa. ‘Tessarose Productions’ performed singing and dancing fun with music and movement for 60 minutes in front of 250 children along with their parents/caregivers.

Tessa is a qualified educator and Brian is a professional musician dedicated to making music for children (0-6 years). Since teaming up in 1991 they have sold more than 200,000 tapes, CD’s, and DVD’s. and have produced 600 original songs. Behind all the fun there is a serious goal, many of their songs, targeted at newborns to seven olds teach crucial co-ordination skills important for brain development and learning. Tessarose are committed to music that is the right speed for young children.

The songs are simple and slow enough for youngsters to understand then respond to. The tunes are catchy, the words repetitive and clear so children can learn to sing the songs themselves. Tessa and Brian are great believers that children who move well will find learning easier.

What a fantastic event and a wonderful turn out. Thanks everyone for coming along and supporting the Active Movement philosophy
