About Active Movement
At Counties Manukau Sport we believe all children deserve the best possible chance in life, and that is why we are proud to offer this new initiative that is designed to embody the whole child – mind, body and soul.
“Active Movement” encourages babies and youngsters from 0 to five years of age to use basic movement skills that are very important for learning, moving, and communicating as they develop and grow.
We know movement is vital for children to gain basic skills such as running, hopping, catching, and balancing. Research illustrates the importance of movement experiences are to develop a child’s brain and confidence with movement.
The “Active Movement” initiative was founded by SPARC (Sport and Recreation NZ) in 2003, and can be found implemented in Early Childhood Centres, Kohanga Reos, and in homes across the country from Invercargill to Northland.
The initiative comes with 14 useful activity guides that blend easily into the day to day lives of children, for example, balancing to walking, and tummy time to climbing. The Active Movement Advisors at Counties Manukau Sport also offer you all the support and assistance you need as a parent or caregiver to safely practice the techniques with your baby, toddler, or under-five year old. The best part is the service is totally free to residents in our region!
If you would like to find out more, or to order the guidelines booklet, set of 14 activity guides and DVD, you can phone 0800 ACTIVE or download the resources straight off the SPARC website.
A free DVD is also available “Active Movement for Under Fives” Series One and Series Two
This initiative is suitable for Early Childhood Educators, and parents or caregivers of babies to under-fives, and is available in many languages.
