Active Movement in the Gardens

02 March 2010

On the 24 February this month, Counties Manukau Sport organised a free music and movement concert for children under 5 at the Auckland Botanical Gardens in Manurewa. ‘Tessarose Productions’ performed singing and dancing fun with music and movement for 60 minutes in front of 250 children along with their parents/caregivers.

Tessa is a qualified educator and Brian is a professional musician dedicated to making music for children (0-6 years).  Since teaming up in 1991 they have sold more than 200,000 tapes, CD’s, and DVD’s. and have produced 600 original songs. Behind all the fun there is a serious goal, many of their songs, targeted at newborns to seven olds teach crucial co-ordination skills important for brain development and learning. Tessarose are committed to music that is the right speed for young children.

The songs are simple and slow enough for youngsters to understand then respond to. The tunes are catchy, the words repetitive and clear so children can learn to sing the songs themselves. Tessa and Brian are great believers that children who move well will find learning easier.

What a fantastic event and a wonderful turn out. Thanks everyone for coming along and supporting the Active Movement philosophy

Gymsports Rolls it out
21st October 2009

Gymsports NZ and Counties Manukau Sport held a successful foundation skills workshop at Bruce Pulman Park recently. The attendees benefited from the expertise and knowledge of Gymsports world renowned facilitator Tas Evans. Tas introduced educators from early childhood centres around the region to activities to help children develop their fundamental or foundation movement skills.
As well as identifying the fundamental movement patterns and exploring manipulative and spatial awareness concepts, the practical workshop saw attendees playing stuck in the mud, scarf tag, beanbag throwing in pairs, moving and stopping in different ways. Tas reminded everyone children need to practise these simple games so they have the skills in place to participate in more structured sports.

Kiwicare Kenderine Preschool a local preschool in Papatoetoe received a wheelie bin of sports equipment through the Infinity Trust and Counties Manukau Sport. This centre has been working with an Active Movement advisor for the past year and have made a huge commitment to delivering  and planning Active Movement for the children in their care. Congratulations and well done to the staff at Kiwicare Preschool.

Brianwave Trust Workshop
November 9 2009
73 people attended the recent Brainwave Trust Workshop held in Manukau City. Wendy Nelson the presenter gave information to the group on the important role teachers and parents  play in providing positive early experinces in a young childs life. Wendy stated that It is recognised and now scientifically proven that the early childhood years profoundly affect adult life and in turn affect the society we live in. Brainwave Trust’s vision is that one day every child in New Zealand will get the best start in life because parents and the whole community understand and value the impact early experiences have on brain development, and ultimately on the healthy development of society. By engaging with and educating each other about the importance of the first three years we give all New Zealand children the opportunity to reach their potential.
Attendees went away motivated and inspired with comments including "just being aware of this information will allow me to be more attentive to childrens needs" "I will include knowledge about TV and the young brain in our centre newsletter"

Free Wriggle & Rhyme Sessions!
Free Wriggle & Rhyme, Active Movement for Early Learning sessions are being held at your local library during school term time.

Active Movement is a SPARC (Sport and Recreation NZ) initiative which aims to provide positive movement experiences to stimulate development of both the brain and the body. Each session will be based on the Active Movement set of 14 activity guides using a range of music and movement.

Libraries are working with their Council and Regional Sports Trust to provide Wriggle & Rhyme sessions across the greater Auckland region with the focus mainly for babies from birth to two years.

Movement is a child’s first language, so it is important to provide babies with whole body movements’ right from birth. Parents and caregivers are invited to take part in these free weekly sessions at their local library, where they can also learn skills to put into practice at home.

While the activities are generally for babies, older pre-schoolers are also welcome to attend Wriggle & Rhyme sessions, and will benefit too.

50 community libraries are taking part in the Wriggle & Rhyme programme across the greater Auckland region.
