We work in the field of engaging as many Maori in any form of sport or physical activity – from Tamariki at Kohanga Reo to our kaumatua on the Marae. Kaiwhakahaere help to initiate support and promote activities and programmes within both Maori and mainstream settings.

Karla has played sport all of her life, worked within Maori health and has a good understanding of the benefits of physical activity. Karla believes that physical activity & sport are an integral part of living in today’s society and is an essential part in the health and wellbeing of Maori. Working with your Kaiwhakahaere can help get you, your whanau and community on the road to a more active & healthier lifestyle.

Jamie comes from humble beginnings in the heart of South Auckland and is passionate about the health and wellbeing of Maori, especially in her community. She has studied, worked and volunteered in the Sport & Recreation industry and has also worked within Maori Health.

The role of Kaiwhakahaere for the He Oranga Poutama Service has given her an opportunity to show others how keeping active and being involved in sports can have a huge impact on the well being of whanau, hapu & iwi.

The incidence of poor health amongst Maori has contributed to Karla & Jamie’s commitment to getting whanau more active and involved in sport. They also say that programmes like He Oranga Poutama show just how effective coalition between Maori, Government agencies and mainstream organisations can be.
