Softball delivered to over 100 children at Yendarra School

Primary Sport delivered softball skills at Yendarra school as part of their commitment to increase sport participation in Year 5 & 6.  Over 100 children received basic softball tuition. The drills and games were built around every one succeeding and having fun!
Primary Sport aims to increase intra school sports participation by holding further days at various schools in Papatoetoe and Otara during 2010.
Well done to Michael from room 20, he was outstanding in his softball skills and great helping staff set up activities, good job!

Papatoetoe Primary Schools Successfully Trial After School Sports Programme

Papatoetoe South, Papatoetoe North, Holy Cross and Papatoetoe West were the first primary schools in Papatoetoe to trial The John Walker Find Your Field of Dreams Primary Sport After School Sports Programme towards the end of 2009. 

The above mentioned schools provided pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 to attend sport specific after school programmes.

The sessions reached capacity with sports such ass Softball, Soccer, Cricket and Touch being delivered by the Primary Sport team from Counties Manukau Sport. 

Primary Sport will be supporting Primary schools in the Papatoetoe and Otara communities in 2010 increasing participation through after school and lunchtime sport sessions, linking schools to clubs, supporting staff with in school training and inter and intra school competition.

Push Play Have a Go Day Mayfield Park Reserve

The Primary Sport Programme ran a successful have a go day in Otara.

Over 150 Primary School children played sports such as American Football, Korfball, Petanque, Ten Pin Bowling and Aussie Rules also known as Kiwi Kick

The taster sessions were in preparation for Primary Sport’s upcoming After School Sports Programme (ASSP)

Support on the day came from M.I.T who ran Tag, Tangaroa College, Baradene College and members of the Counties Manukau Sport Active Schools team.

The schools involved on the day were:

Bairds Manfreight / Dawson / East Tamaki / Wymondley / Yendarra

Thank you to Cockle Bay Petanque, AFLNZ, South Auckland Raiders, Counties Manukau Korfball and Manukau Ten Pin Bowling for their time and resources and making the day such a success.


Wymondley Strikers Unbeaten in Otara Primary Schools Volleyball Competition

20 November 2009

Wymondley Strikers went 8 games unbeaten to become the first ever champions of the Otara Primary Schools Volleyball competition.

Second and third place went to Yendarra Strikers & Rongomaites who both won 7 and drew 1.

The games were held at the Otara Leisure Centre. The staff at the centre led by Mike Ibbertson and Terry Morrison along with Counties Manukau Sport's Primary Sport organised the event.

14 teams from local Otara schools took part. The tournament began to attract a number of parents and siblings of the players involved towards the latter weeks of the tournament.

The winners of competitions organised by Primary Sport in 2010 will receive “The John Walker Shield”.

  • Flatbush

  • Dawson

  • Bairds Manfreight

  • The Otara Leisure After School Club

Primary Sports launch at Otara Recreation Centre

Former league player Monty Betham was at the Otara Recreation Centre recently to help launch the Primary Sports Programme being run by Counties Manukau Sports with The John Walker’s Find Your Field of Dreams Foundation.

He was joined by children from Yendarra Primary School, one of the first schools to benefit from the programme.

Primary Sport is a programme aimed at providing sport and recreation

Opportunities for children aged between 9 and 11.

It is financed by the Find Your Field Of Dreams Foundation and SPARC, and the money will go towards after-school sports activities, assisting schools with school competitions and providing in-school coaching and training.

Counties Manukau Sport will initially run the programme in nine schools in Papatoetoe and 10 schools in Otara.

Primary Sport will eventually be introduced to other parts of Manukau.
