Club Smart
The Club Smart programme has been developed to help improve the capability of the sports clubs in the Counties Manukau region and is funded through the John Walker Find Your Field of Dreams Foundation. This programme will offer sports clubs dedicated support and resources to enable their club to be a safe, inclusive, effective club that offers participation and development opportunities, is sustainable and supports their volunteers.

- Club Smart Process
- Club Smart Benefits
- Contacts and futher information
- Clubs involved in the programme
The programme will see three Club Development Officers (CDOs), who will each work closely with 15-20 clubs, working through the Club Smart process (outlined below). Involvement in the programme will help clubs in a number of areas, and will see the clubs see a number of benefits.
As the programme is funded by the John Walker Find Your Field of Dreams Foundation, the focus is currently only on Manukau clubs. Therefore the CDOs will target clubs in Manukau and offer them the opportunity to join the programme. If you are a sports club in Manukau and would like to be a part of the programme, then please read on to learn more about the process and benefits and then contact the Sports Development team.
If you are a club in the Papakura or Franklin areas, please view the Club A-Z Manual to see if this can be of some assistance. If you still require further help or support, please contact the Sport Development team and there may be some way that we can assist.
1. Club Smart Agreement
CDO has an initial meeting with the club to introduce Club Smart to the Committee. If the club wishes to join the programme, they will sign a Club Smart Agreement. The CDO will also contact the Regional Sports Organisation (RSO) that the club falls under, to let them know the process has begun and inviting them to be involved in the programme.
2. Club Smart Profile and Club Smart Summary
CDO meets with a cross-section of the club and works through the Club Smart Profile (getting basic details and numbers about the club) and the Club Smart Summary. This process will look at the following areas of club structure, organisation and performance and will outline the clubs strengths, and highlight areas for improvement.

3. Club Smart Action Plan
The summary will be distributed to the club and then the CDO will meet with the members to work together to establish an action plan for the club, for the next 12-18 months. The CDO will then work with the club, assisting them through their action plan, bringing together best practice and resources available.
4. Club Smart Exit
Once the club have worked through their action plan (12 – 24 months are given for this), Counties Manukau Sport will present the club with a Letter of Reference, outlining what they have achieved throughout the programme. This will end the club’s involvement on the Club Smart programme, however the CMS sport development team will still be available to the club in a general capacity.
Benefits of the Club Smart programme
1. A club will improve their capability therefore making the club a more viable, vibrant, and healthy organisation. They will benefit from an improved structure, which will lead to increased satisfaction from their members. In addition, they might enjoy:
- Increased club membership numbers
- Improved club administration and organisation
- Higher standards of coaching and officiating
- Improved communication (internally and externally)
- Competition opportunities for all levels and ability
- Links developed with schools and communities
- Improved player performance and results
- Increased volunteer satisfaction and therefore retention
- An assured future for the club
2. The club will develop a strong working relationship with Counties Manukau Sport by being able to work together to implement any recommendations, changes or improvements. Through this collaborative process the club will have access to best practice and information specific to clubs.
3. A Letter of Reference will be given to the club after completion of the programme. The Letter of Reference can be used when making applications for grants, as it will acknowledge the processes and outcomes the club has gone through to complete Club Smart.
4. Local and regional media will be contacted, recognising club’s completion of the Club Smart programme, and outlining their achievements.
