Club Information

Petanque is a sport in which age or gender plays no part, it is ideal for those who wish to take part in a non contact sport which does not have a strict dress code.

Ten of the twelve Cockle Bay Pistes were developed by the Manukau City Council in 1994 (this has since been expanded to 12 by the club). An open day was held to mark the occasion on December the 11th 1994. The council was very keen to include Pétanque in its sports festival held every year in February, and needed a playing area. The Cockle Bay Pétanque club was established on October the 11th 1995. The Club presently has 57 members with a good mix of competitive and social players, on a play day we usually have 25 to 30 players turn up on a Wednesday and Sunday from 1.30pm (wintertime) at 5.00pm (summertime). We host various Tournaments eg Auckland Regional Singles, Auckland Interclub, Veterans Doubles, Charity Doubles, Rotary fun Tournament, Our Club is heavily involved with Alliance Française and the A.P.A. in organising and running the annual Auckland All Schools Petanque Tournament which is held at the largest terrain in Auckland the Herne Bay Petanque Club.

We are currently endeavouring to introduce the sport into the School system and are involved with coaching with the Botany Downs Secondary School and Sancta Maria College.

It was in 2005 our Club through our President Warren Barrett became more involved with the Auckland All Schools Petanque Triples Tournament which was organised and run by the Herne Bay Petanque Club in association with Alliance Française, there were 56-Triples teams taking part in that Tournament. Our first two years was in the capacity as helpers, since 2007 we have been the convenor for this Tournament.

Prior to the 2005 Tournament Warren was approached by the French teachers of Botany Downs Secondary School and Edgewater College for help in preparing their teams for the Tournament, with both schools obtaining credible results Botany coming second and Edgewater finishing in the top twenty.

After this Tournament it was felt there was an untapped market for potential players and we canvassed all of the local secondary schools in an effort to have Petanque introduced as an alternative sport, the only response so far has been from Botany Downs Secondary School, Sancta Maria College and the Elim Christian College we have had a limited amount of coaching time with these schools since.

Club Spotlight is an opportunity for sports clubs in the Counties Manukau region to promote themselves via the CMS website, with a month in the spotlight to help raise their public profile. Clubs are invited to complete a brief Club Profile form outlining some basic information on their club and highlighting some of their successes and good stories. From those forms received, a club will be randomly selected to feature for a month in this section, and all previously featured clubs will be accessible too (see links below)

In addition, the club of the month will receive two 550gram pots of and Herbal Relief anti-inflammatory cream and All Sports Muscle warming cream, through the valued sponsorship of new company in the sports muscle rub market, Needarub (based in Waiuku, Franklin). There are currently three rubs available in the range.

  • ‘Herbal Relief’ is a creamy textured rub full of essential oils. When massaged into the skin it is quickly absorbed for fast acting herbal relief of minor muscular strains, aches and pains. A good nti-Inflammatory. It contains essential oils of Calendula, Peppermint, Arnica and Hypericum.
  • ‘All Sports’ Muscle warming cream helps prevent strains and injuries, massage ‘ALL SPORTS’ into muscles and joints before a game or event to increase blood flow and warm muscle tissue.
  • ‘All Sports Junior’ Muscle warming cream is the same as above but with reduced menthol and is recommended for children over 7yrs.
