Latest News from Primary Sport Manurewa...

It's ALL Action at Action Sports

How do you cater for one hundred Years 5 and 6 Manurewa Central School students who would dearly love to play in an interschool soccer field day.  The reality is that interschool is not possible, however, one hundred can play in a soccer field day.

Manurewa Central School recently joined forces with Counties-Manukau’s Primary Sports  Team  to spearhead some high action soccer at Indoor Action Sports in Manukau City.

This venue had numerous advantages including its obvious indoor venue plus tiered seating, courts fully enclosed by netting and a venue in close proximity to the school.

The barriers related to organising a field day were overcome for everyone at the school by PS Team, converting  the vision into reality by undertaking the bookings, preparing the games’ schedule, supplying the referees and running the entire event on the day.  Manurewa Central School’s role was to arrive at the venue with ten teams of ten children!

Two of the objectives for this event were to involve children who are somewhat reticent to participate in team sports and to encourage a significant number of girls to be involved.  What a pleasure it was to see the girls’ confidence flourish.  Subsequently the second half of the morning saw a revamp of the teams into mixed gender teams where the girls then went on to dominate the action.

The  Action Sports’ event was an outstanding success.  So successful in fact that the school is now planning to enlist Primary  Sport’s expertise to run an indoor soccer event for their middle school.

Clayton Park Sports Leaders “Assembly with the Stars”

As part of their Sports Leadership Programme, the student Sports Leaders at Clayton Park School have for the past four weeks, been the first to arrive at school every Tuesday and Friday morning.

A very dedicated group of more than 20 students; the reason for their early arrival was that they were learning games that they could teach the younger students during break times.  Part of the Manurewa Primary Sport initiative, two coaches from the Primary Sport team coached the students in one or two games per week, went through the playing strategies and the steps the students would need for when they became the Leaders at break time.

The students were recognized for their efforts and became fully fledged Sports Leaders at a whole school assembly this week. Local sports stars NZ  Women’s Rugby League and NZ Tag team member,  KarleyTe Kawa,  and  Hockey Black Stick Marcus Child attended the assembly and gave some insights  and advice to  any future sports stars and shared stories about how they became  involved in their sports.

Primary Sport coaches Kalo Kata and SelaimaKaufisi were also on hand to give out the certificates and whistles ,and share in the success of the Sports Leaders.

Well Done and Congratulations to the Sports Leaders of Clayton Park.

600 Manurewa  students per week in Primary Sport Coaching Programme

Ten Manurewa Primary Schools, twelve different sports, 600 students and 29 hours of coaching per week. Sounds like a recipe for success!

This was the first “Out of  School Hours Sports “ Coaching module with Primary Sport Manurewa, where coaches went into schools  before school, during lunchtime or after school to coach sports.
Some schools opted for coaching on four afternoons per week, some wanted only lunchtime sports coaching, and one school had 4 sports in action, on one afternoon.  The team of coaches included NZ  and Provincial Representatives, Representative Sports Coaches, Club and Community Coaches, and tertiary students undertaking Sports studies.

Feedback from the students and the schools has been great.

The After School Sports Sessions have been a great success!  The kids love attending and they are active nearly 100% of the time.  Enjoyment and engagement levels are also very high.

Primary Sport  Programme is expanding in Term 2, and will be out and about in 15 schools with 49 hours of coaching planned.

Primary Sport kicks off in Manurewa Schools with “Have a Go Days.”

Takanini School was the first Manurewa School  to host the New Primary Sport Coaching Team, when they had their Have A go Day on Tuesday 1st March. The Year 3-8 students were taken through  coaching sessions for Badminton, American Football, Hockey and Basketball giving them a taste of some sports they may not have tried before.

The Primary Sport coaches were supported by coaches from South Auckland  Raiders Gridiron Club, Southern Districts Hockey Club, and Weymouth Badminton Club who shared their expertise with coaching skills and fun activities in each sport.

Similar “Have A Go Days “ have also been held  at Manurewa South, The Gardens, Clayton Park, Manurewa West and Homai School, and future events are being planned for the end of Term 1 and in Term 2 at other Manurewa Schools.

To date over 1300 students have had a chance to participate in these sports days with nine different sports being involved over the six days. Coaches have included current and former NZ representatives KarleyTe Kawa (Tag), Stacey Cunningham (Basketball), Kelly Maipi (Tag and League) Marcus Child (Hockey), as well as a number of club and community coaches.

The response from participating schools has been enthusiastic with teachers really appreciating the opportunity the Have A go Days have offered their students.

Out of School Hours Sports Coaching
Our Fiirst Week a Great Success!  Over 700 students, from 9 different schools took part in the first week of the Primary Sport “Out of School Hours Sports Coaching”  with twenty coaching sessions being delivered by the Primary Sport coaches in before school, lunchtime or afterschool  programmes.

For some students the sport was a follow up to the ones they had tried at the recent Have A Go Days, for others it was a new sport introduced to the school such as Ki Orahi. With up to 25 students working with 2 coaches at each session, the students have a great opportunity to  be active, learn new skills and develop game sense.

The coaching sessions run in 4 week blocks, with schools selecting which sports they would like and when they would like the coaching sessions. The Primary Sport team then work with the coaches to deliver  the programme.  If you would like more information please contact the Primary Sport Team at CM Sport.
