In Manukau, 24.6% of the population is under 15. Many of these young people face barriers to participating in sport due to socio-economic challenges and limited access through low-decile schools.
Yet, this region has produced world-class athletes like Valerie Adams, Jonah Lomu, Ruben Wiki, Scott Dixon, and Barbara Kendall—proof that talent can thrive with the right support.
Primary Sport is designed to nurture the next generation by giving Years 0–8 students across Counties Manukau more chances to get active, build skills, and discover their passion for sport.
We focus on:
We currently deliver this programme in schools across Papakura, Manurewa, Māngere, Ōtāhuhu, Papatoetoe, Ōtara, and Franklin.
Whether you're a teacher, principal, or community leader, Counties Manukau Sport is here to help your school create a fun, active environment where every child can shine.
What Schools are saying about our Primary Sport Programme
Clendon Park School
"It encouraged more kids to try out for our school soccer teams, as they had a few basic skills that made them more confident to give it a go"
Mayfield Primary
"Our coach was an amazing mentor and coach for our younger students in the school. He was able to engage them and encourage them to take new risks in an unfamiliar sport."
Flatbush School
"A lot more confidence amongst non sporting children who tend not to trial out for teams etc or even participate in game. A lot more confidence from all children along with increased give it a go attitude. Development of teachers as they gained ideas from coach and carried them on through the term".
Pedal Power
Pedal Power is a free cycle skills programme for Year 4–6 students, delivered by Counties Manukau Sport. Based on the BikeNZ "Learn to Ride" framework, it also introduces basic BMX techniques that can be used on a track.
Our trained instructors work with students at school, teaching essential cycling skills like braking, cornering, balancing, mounting, dismounting, and signalling—aligned with NZTA Grade 1 standards. The sessions are active and fun, using games to reinforce learning. All bikes and helmets are provided.
Balance Bikes
Balance Bike programme designed for Years 0–2 students, helping them develop coordination, balance, and confidence through fun, age-appropriate activities.
The programme was piloted in a local school with great success—especially among students who were least likely to participate in physical activity. With an average of five students per class struggling to ride later in life, the need for early intervention is clear.
